I had never been out to Palm Springs before, but now that I have a lovely new sister-in-law that is from that area I’ve been making little trips out there to see what it has to offer -turns out quite a bit! I’ve been in the high heat of the summer and in the dead of winter and it has things to offer year round. I’m planning on a couple posts, so take this as a little introduction to my first impression of Palm Springs.
For the Plant Lover:
After you have an amazing breakfast at the Ace Hotel head down the street to the Moorten Botanical Garden. It’s been a family business for a long time and you’ll see some amazing examples of what cacti are capable of. They have lots of little humorous touches everywhere, and a giant tortoise who really loves his greens. They also sell little plants for you to take home!
For the Water Babies
Now you’re probably thinking “Palm Springs is too hot!” and you’re definitely not wrong! One of the best things about Palm Springs is all the fancy hotels and resorts. I can’t afford to stay at the at the moment (hopefully one day!), but I can afford to pay their pool fee and drink all the cocktails I want. Most places, like the previously mentioned Ace Hotel, or The Saguaro offer use of their pool for a small fee. The fee is usually around $20 and they offer towels. I did have to empty my water bottle before entering at the Saguaro, so keep that in mind before going.
For the Desert Dreamer
Let’s take you out of the “city” of Palm Springs and into the desert. The obvious choice is Joshua Tree, which is full of beautiful landscapes, incredible animals, and unusual plant life, but that’s for another post purely because I’m waiting to go camping out there soon! If you’re not looking to camp, another day trip option is Pioneertown! It’s a fun little place with an authentic old west feel. There are a bunch of little artist shops, and a goat man. The goat man takes care of these really sweet goats while his wife runs a little shop that sells handmade lotions, soaps, and lip balms made from their milk. I bought some coconut milk and lemongrass body lotion and can’t wait to stock up again. It seriously is the most amazing lotion!
While they do have some activities happening up there, the other fun thing to do is go to Pappy and Harriets! They’ve got amazing drinks and bowls that will stick to your ribs. They also have amazing live music - make sure to check their schedule.
